I have wanted to hike these caves forever! We love Kanab and have been there often- I never could find them or find much info about them!!! These are man-made caves!!
They were used to harvest sand for glass in the 1970s.
After the first few minutes of hiking- all my worries went away. Never did I feel like it was unsafe for my family. It was an easy, short hike with a huge reward! The caves were magical!
LOCATION
The trail is located in between the Moqui Caves Museum and the Best Friend Animal Sanctuary exit on HWY 89. The caves are on the east side of the road. They are NOT the same thing as the Moqui Cave museum. You park in a pullout area on the west side of the road right across from the caves. You can look up and see the caves from there.
TRAIL
Once you cross the road there is a trail in the dirt ( not marked but apparent) we followed that to the rock and stayed to the north. I think that is the easiest way up. Once we got to the rock we went straight up the sandstone for about 20 feet until we found the thread that takes you across. There was one spot that was maybe a little sketchy walking across- but if you just took a few steps down and walked across there it was fine.
Slightly sketchy here- instead of going straight across. Walk down a few steps ( where my hot hubby is) and walk across there- no big deal.
The caves are sheer drop offs- keep an eye on and educate your kids. Make sure they know not to go close to the edge.
Please be respectful and DO NOT add to the carvings in the sandstone walls.
Always practice Leave No Trace and leave the places you visit better than you found them!
